Familiar Actors

In Case of Emergency on ABC aired to less than stellar reviews and some people are betting it won’t last the season.

The premise is a lot similar to CBS’s The Class ---- where a group of ex-schoolmates are reunited after 20 years, amidst unfortunate events. Of the two, I prefer I.C.E. better, mainly because of its very familiar actors ---- David Arquette (Courtney Cox’ hubby), Jonathan Silverman (The Single Guy), Lori Laughlin (Full House) , Kelly Hu (Xmen) & Greg Germann (Ally McBeal).

As for the show, admittedly I.C.E is not on my priority list. There is little to feel
excited about its premise, because 1) it’s not original; 2) I was not that amused. However, as usual, rarely do first episodes seal the fate of a TV show, so it’s worth another look next week. And I’ll give David Arquette an A for effort --- for trying to cleverly use Phoebe Buffay’s (should be) patented word: “filangi” in a discussion.

Synopsis of I.C.E (from BuddyTV):

In Case of Emergency is about a couple high school acquaintances who are reunited years later and find their lives have not turned out as they had planned. Hapless, desperate and lonely, they are all brought together in a string of emergencies and at the end of the day, that'll find that they've got each other in case of emergency.

Some TV News

They've not even warmed up the slots they filled during midseason changes, but guess which shows are up for cancellation:

3 Lbs
Nov. 30 - Midseason replacement drama is itself replaced after three weeks. Nov 30:Today, CBS has fewer brains--the network has put 3 Lbs. on indefinite hiatus.
and possibly:
Daybreak
After scoring ratings more befitting of a cable drama, Day Break appears poised to get the axe just ten episodes short of wrapping up its story line. Day Break initially came in just shy of LOST's numbers and quickly dropped. Last week the show brought in a meager five million viewers, a quarter of which tuned out during the shows second half-hour. The inclusion of thirty second LOST clips seem to have no drawing power to the temporal mystery that stars Taye Diggs. If the show IS cancelled (Day Break fans can cross their fingers) an announcement on the cancellation is expected by the beginning of next week. The show picked to replace it? Nothing short of amazing...

This month of December is the best time to catch up on shows you may have missed (downloading that is!) since there are no new episodes. Coz everyone's out there, merry-making....'tis the season to go partying, falalalalalalalalala.

When Lost is back next year, it's moving to a new time slot.
ABC ANNOUNCES THE PREMIERES OF NEW COMEDIES THE KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY AND IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3

Lost Returns with Original Episodes Wednesday, February 7 At a New Time, 10:00 p.m., ET

Uh-oh? Lost will be up against CSI MIAMI, a ratings killer.

Rome's Second Season is underway, yey. Promo here

My Top List for 2007

After providing you all those Top TV 2007 links from credible reviewers in my past entries, it's now my turn. I am in no means credible as they are and there are so much more shows I need to check (but I've been lazy to do so) but indulge me please. :)

It has not been a banner year for TV this season and for me personally, as I've said this a couple of times before --- I have been hating 2007. It's been bad, yes. But there's also a tiny glimmer of hope and sunshine every now and then. It's the same for some of the shows I have watched this year....that tiny glimmer of hope and sunshine.

On hindsight, I think I would remember this year and this season best. Mostly because of the things I had to weather through (life-lessons learned) and the shows TV had to offer (short as the are, they were some of the best shows I've watched in a while).

On with the recognition...

Best Reality Series: The Amazing Race. The show is still doing it for me after a dozen installments. With some reality shows, I'd just as soon walk away from it because it has become predictable and, well, scripted in a way. Not so with TAR, which promises and consistently brings something different every time. This current season run has also been great for the show, as it earns one of its highest rated episodes ever (Season Premiere for TAR 12).

Guilty Pleasure: Big Brother And I'm not talking about the Pinoy Edition...because that, I had given up. I'm referring to the crazy edition that is Big Brother USA 8 last summer. Watching people connive against each other is a form of escapism, which is what the show promotes. I will and cannot ever do that in real life. But on TV, as bad as this may sound, I enjoy real people doing it...and for what? Money!! It's the lowest form of entertainment, but 7-8 Million people find something amusing in that. I'm glad I'm not inside the house but I'm equally thrilled people go crazy in there.

Best Comedy: It's a triple tie!
  • The Office - this season wasn't there best but having to dissect through each episode for Watchingtheoffice makes me appreciate it more than usual.
  • Samantha Who? - it's a surprise hit and surprisingly very funny
  • Ugly Betty - its second season has edged over the first, and save for annoying Betty, I'm enjoying everyone else's part in this series.
Runner-Up: 30 Rock - when people said last year it was like Arrested Development, I couldn't see the comparison. Now I do.

A comedy I could not undertand: Flight of Conchords - I tried to get pass two episodes at least. I just don't get it. Is the singing supposed to be funny? It made me sleep, really.

Best Drama: Brothers and Sisters - hands-down. A sappy family drama that manages to produce some clever writing in there. Sure it borders on daytime soap almost (that's like telenovela for us here ---- incredible story lines and all that drama) but I need that kind of drama once in a while.

Runners-up:
  • Lost - the ending made me get up my seat and wail, "Noooooo!"
  • I would've picked Friday Night Lights but I haven't been so invested in it like last season. It's still a good show, though and I remain a regular viewer. But there's just something missing. Maybe after the strike, I'll find what I'm looking for in it.
Best New Series: Pushing Daisies. I have ran out of adjectives to praise it.

Runners-Up:
  • Chuck - I'm glad I invested in it, because the show got better and better with each episode
  • Dirty Sexy Money - here's another family story that is a cross between Brothers and Sisters/Arrested Development. What's not to love about that?
  • Burn Notice - Like Samantha Who? I was mighty surprised at how entertaining this show was. I welcome it's return in mid-2008.
Wishing it bars up: Life - I enjoy the series, I love Damian Lewis (haaaay....). But as with any procedural crime series, I would memorize the sequence and routine by now. Although, that isn't so bad since it's the same feeling I have for House. And to this day, I still love that show.

Worth Checking Out:
  • Greek - an entertaining college comedy
  • Damages - with Glenn Close. Glenn Close is enough reason to watch it.
Will watch again before 2008 is here:
  • Mad Men - I think I stopped watching after episode four. I think I got insulted at how they treated women...can't remember exactly. But I'm convinced to give it another try after reading all those reviews and praises.
I have watched too much TV in 2007!

Mid-Season Checklist

It's TV's mid-season, do you know where your favorite new TV shows currently stand (with viewership/ratings)? This might be good time to:

  • check out upcoming shows
  • catch up on the ones that got cancelled
  • drop the ones that aren't worthy
  • scout for a new favorite
Here's my own checklist.

TV shows for 2006-2007

20 GOOD YEARS (NBC) --- On hiatus but is likely cancelled
3 LBS. (CBS) --- Just premiered, will wait and see
30 ROCK (NBC) --- Cute
ANDY BARKER, P.I. (NBC) --- Meh. Accountant becomes a PI. Numb3rs-inspired
BIG DAY (ABC) --- Starts in end of Nov. Looks promising, possible 24 clone, except that it's a comedy!
BROTHERS & SISTERS (ABC) --- Love!
DAY BREAK (ABC) --- Just premiered, will wait and see
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (NBC) --- Must watch sometime
HAPPY HOUR (FOX) --- Cancelled, I care not
HELP ME HELP YOU (ABC) --- Couldn't care, but apparently someone's still watching it as it is still on air
HEROES (NBC) --- Breakthrough show of the season, must watch sometime
HIDDEN PALMS (The CW) --- Dawson's Creekish-Desperate Housewiveish but the network doesn't seem to want to put it on air
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY (ABC) --- Starts in 2007 - no idea how it is, stars that guy on Ally (Richard)
JERICHO (CBS) --- On hiatus (reruns for now), to be back Feb 2007
JUSTICE (FOX) --- On hiatus but is likely cancelled, bummer; off to DL then
KIDNAPPED (NBC) --- Cancelled - got to see the recent/last episode on TVU, got bored
MEN IN TREES (ABC) --- Currently contemplating on watching this
NOTES FROM THE UNDERBELLY (ABC) --- Starts in 2007 - no idea about this show at all
RAINES (NBC) --- Starts in 2007 - possible Medium clone
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT (CBS) --- Starts in 2007 - but I tell you now, this show looks stupid
RUNAWAY (The CW) --- Cancelled, a pity!
SHARK (CBS) --- So-so. Full Season order. This is Atty. House but not quite crabby as the doctor
SIX DEGREES (ABC) --- On hiatus but is likely cancelled or reformatted
SMITH (CBS) --- Cancelled, darn
STANDOFF (FOX) --- Hmmm Ron Livingston…yum; worth checking out sometime
STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP (NBC) --- Love!
THE BLACK DONNELLYS (NBC) --- Starts in 2007 - possible Sopranos clone
THE CLASS (CBS) --- Quite confusing, I'm on the fence on this one
THE GAME (The CW) --- Starts in 2007 - no idea about this show at all
THE KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY (ABC) --- Starts in 2007 - no idea about this show at all
THE NINE (ABC) --- Possibly for cancellation bwahaha. I did not like this one
THE SINGLES TABLE (NBC) --- Starts in 2007 - no idea about this show at all
THE WEDDING ALBUM (FOX) --- Starts in 2007 - sounds like the plot's cheesy
THE WINNER (FOX) --- Starts in 2007 - possible Wonder Years clone, except the guy's 30 years old here
'TIL DEATH (FOX) --- On hiatus but is likely cancelled and no one cares
TRAVELER (ABC) --- Starts in 2007 - possible love; possible 24/Prison Break clone
UGLY BETTY (ABC) --- Love!
VANISHED (FOX) --- Cancelled, I care not
WATERFRONT (CBS) --- Cancelled even before anyone's ever heard of it!

And then.... while I'm deciding on what I could possibly add to my watchlist (which will further bring me down to that state where my IQ's below below-zero.... News flash: too much TV is bad!), my husband has acquired copies of Dragonball-Z (yes that cartoon!) and has engaged my son and myself to watching it with him.

Which brings me to this story of my dad telling me I've been slacking very badly . My dad, the other week, blurted out of the blue, "Kung kelan ka tumanda, dun ka naging tamad at burara". Yikes! Akala ko hindi niya napapansin hehe. Opo, dati po akong masinop, masipag at maaasahan. Hindi na ngayon, LOL!

Life's too short to stress over things. I've changed my profile description on blogger (see About Me, or that text beside my TV-avatar). I don't wanna over-achieve now. I've been doing that all my life before. I have stopped aspiring for things or working hard for it. I just want to take it easy. Less headache, less problems, less things to stress over.

I don't know where I am at and if this is even a good choice a 30something has to make. I just know I don't want the pressure anymore. So, I just want to sit down and watch the world go by, while I watch TV (hehehe).

Does this sound like mid-life crisis to you?

Ally & Friends

Because I've been trying to place where I've seen Hayden Panettiere, who plays the 16-year old cheerleader with indestructible powers on Heroes, I did a search on IMDb and found out she was that kid on Ally McBeal, playing Ally's daughter.

Then I realized, four actors from A McB are in the TV shows that I am currently watching. After 5 years since Ally's cancellation, they're back on my TV. Although they're not in one show altogether, but they're back. :)

Calista Flockhart
(Ally McBeal)

Calista now appears as Kitty, one of the siblings in ABC's Brothers & Sisters. You can check my entries on Brothers & Sisters here, here and here.

Current TV Show rating: one of the best this season, from the writing, to the acting, to the execution. Calista could have another shot at a flourishing TV career. But the downside is, the show is not a ratings puller yet. There is no news for a Season 2 pick-up.

Jane Krakowski
(Elaine Vassal on A McB)

Jane is currently a cast member of 30Rock. She plays Jenna Maroney, the lead female star of the TV Show within a TV show. Entry for 30Rock is here.

Current TV Show rating: The show seems to be improving. And it's been hailed as similar to Arrested Development (I still don't see the similarities). Co-star Alec Baldwin won the Golden Globe for this show. It is probably gonna get renewed for Season 2. Good for Jane.

Peter MacNicol
(John Cage on A McB aka The Biscuit)

He's Thomas Lennox on 24...and he's rather wily here. Not at all likeable as his Ally character. Of the four, his is a character who is a complete opposite of what he played in A McB. Peter MacNicol, after all is such a versatile actor.

Current TV Show rating: It's 24! Even if the plot has a lot of loopholes, you cannot fault this show for improving TV shows as it is now. Because of 24, other productions are challenged to come up with a similar clever concept. Even if it goes on for 10 seasons or more, MacNicol's character may eventually die or is written off as this is what 24 thrives on --- the element of surprise.

Greg Germann
(Richard Fish on A McB)

Greg is still with a group of crazy people, much like his Ally castmates. This time, he is Sherman Yablonsky, a celebrity guru of some sort in In Case of Emergency.

Current TV show rating: The show is a crapfest to be honest. Yet I keep watching it, LOL! And I don't know why. It could be canceled mid-season. Bad move for Greg.

One Less TV Show & Awards-a-Plenty

It's not official, but I do not believe this show is ending before In Case of Emergency. Now, that's funny!

Knights Of Prosperity Pretty Much Canceled
By Kristin Veitch
Yahoo TV

Poor Donal Logue. Oh, how I dig him, but he just can't seem to catch a break when it comes to TV projects lately, and his latest ABC project, Knights of Prosperity--about a gang trying to rob Mick Jagger--is apparently no exception.

Sources tell me that ABC told Knights' writing staff today that the comedy would not be picked up for the "back nine" episodes, which basically means they're planning to shut it down after the current 13-episode commitment.

ABC is not officially uttering a peep about the c-word (that's "cancellation," you dirty birdies!), and simply announcing a time-slot swap with According to Jim. But the writing has been on the wall the past two weeks, as American Idol sucked up viewership from everywhere in the universe, and slashed Knights' audience in half (down to about 3 million viewers).

33

I just discovered I placed this on my profile:

I am 250 years old! Hahaha! No wonder my vision's kinda blurry. :D *edits done* There, it reflects my real age now. :)

Yes, that's how old I really am. 33. Old enough to know I cannot make excuses for sometimes acting and thinking stupid things. And yet I still do! LOL! Not so old enough to claim I know things. I just know a few things. I know I can speak about a few things.

Sucks to be 33. Jesus was 33 when he died. And coincidentally, that's today.

Hoookey.

*****

Saw House earlier. The episode was, as usual, great.... but I'm so distracted by this girlie crush I have on Hugh Laurie, *heart* *heart* Bwahaha! So leave me be and let me just daydream for awhile. And if I restore my brain function, I might just talk about the episode. :) But, really, I'd rather dream of Hugh..... *heart* *heart* ulit!

In Memoriam 2007

I planned on doing a chronicle of all TV characters who died the past season (2006-2007), but with all the things I had to do outside of my TV bumming (dammit! I miss bumming around!) I scrapped the idea.

Anyway, someone else youtubed a similar idea...except that it wasn't about TV characters per se, but TV shows in general.

Here it is...can you spot all the TV shows you will be missing next season?

How many more episodes till I drop this?

I'm not sure why I'm still mentally setting next week's sched for this show, but I am. I'm still going to watch it even when this episode was a complete waste of time. My attachment to the actors is clouding my preference.

Episode synopsis:
Kelly's cop boyfriend catches Harry helping her move her things out of his place and he isn't happy about it. Jason is still trying to have something going on with Dr. Joanna while Sherman's staff refuses to help him to restore his professional reputation.

It sounds a lot like something JD would say or do, no?
