Cast: Mamie Gummer, Justin Hartley, Michael Rady, Jack Coleman, Kelly J. McCreary, Aja Naomi King, Necar Zadegan
The CW doesn't have the best programs on air, and by best, I mean HIGH QUALITY, mindfuck-ing shows. But if it's entertainment you need (read: mindless fun!), these new programs have plenty of potential to deliver just that. So, I'm actually really excited for every new show on their plate.

Logline: Twentysomething best friends (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Nicholas Braun) move from their hometown of Bloomington, Ind., to L.A. to begin their new lives working at Groupon. Evan has trouble breaking his old slothful habits and rather than going out after work to explore L.A. and meet new people, he prefers to play online poker with his friends back home. Rob has different plans and is determined to drag Evan, kicking and screaming, along with him.
Cast: Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Parvesh Cheena, Tim Robinson, Liz Holtan (guest star), Nicholas Braun, Dan Ahdoot
  • Partners
Logline: A personal story of two lifelong friends and their business partners. Architects Charlie (David Krumholtz) and Louis' (Michael Urie) friendship has lasted longer than either of their romantic relationships and almost seems like a weird marriage. When Charlie decides to propose to his girlfriend, Louis' neurotic attempts to be supportive nearly result in the breakup of his own relationship.
Cast: Sophia Bush, Michael Urie, David Krumholtz, Brandon Routh,
I've devoured Sherlock Holmes books as a teenager, so Elementary is something I'm really hoping is good. Not so sure about everything else on CBS' line-up, but that Michael Chiklis sounds interesting, too.

Have you picked out what you're going to watch when it premieres?

Upcoming TV Shows Fall '09

The Live Feed has a summary of what new programs we should be expecting from the networks this coming fall season.

I know, right? Mid Season premieres haven't even finished half-way through. In fact, I'm still waiting on Better Off Ted, Kings and Amy Poehler's Parks and Recreation (to name a few) all of which are starting this March-April.

And then here comes this new list...It's a pretty coherent one, too. It gives all of us a, uh, birds eye view of what's coming this September.

My early favorites from the list? Probably Legally Mad, which will star Kristin Chenoweth, who I so loved on Pushing Daisies. Incidentally, her Pushing Daisies co-star, Anna Friel, is also being eyed for a starring role in one of two (or three?) female centric shows from that list. It's either Eastwick or I, Claudia for her next season.

Anyone addicted to watching TV, should check this list out now: Know your fall TV pilots! Cop, doctor, lawyer, remake or a new idea?

Ray Romano is a Man of A Certain Age

Comedian Ray Romano is doing a 10-part drama about men going through mid-life crisis in "Men of a Certain Age". Joining him in this series are two other men, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula

The project will air on TNT.

Ray Romano doing drama? I've seen him do something similar before...I just forgot what project that was but a serious Ray Romano is kind of convincing, too.

Sherlock Holmes Comes to TV

The Brits will do it first! That may not sound so right because I think Sherlock Holmes has been done on TV before. And Hollywood is doing the movie with Robert Downey, Jr (showing in 2009).

But for one that is set in modern day? On television? The Brits are doing it first!

And this guy to the right (Martin Freeman, from The Office UK) is going to be TV's Sherlock.

Benedict Cumberbatch and The Office's Martin Freeman are to star in a modern-day adaptation of Sherlock Holmes for BBC1.

Cumberbatch, who featured in Starter for 10 and Stuart: A Life Backwards, will take on the role of the cerebral sleuth Holmes, while Freeman will play Dr Watson in Sherlock, a version of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic tales. Rupert Graves will play Inspector Lestrade.

The one-off 60-minute drama is described by the BBC as a "thrilling, funny, fast-paced take" on the Holmes story set in present-day London. But the names, Holmes's address – 221B Baker Street – and the villain, Moriarty, will remain the same.

BBC1's update of the classic drama is the brainchild of Steven Moffat, the new showrunner on Doctor Who, and the League of Gentlemen star Mark Gatiss, who has written and starred in episodes of the revitalised sci-fi drama.

"Everything that matters about Holmes and Watson is the same," said Moffat. "Conan Doyle's original stories were never about frock coats and gaslight; they're about brilliant detection, dreadful villains and blood-curdling crimes – and frankly, the hell with the crinoline."
Full story here.

I have enjoyed reading Sherlock Holmes as a teenager and I am very excited about the Robert Downey movie...and now this? Best news ever!

Upcoming New Show Alert: UNITED STATES OF TARA - Trailer

There seems to be several things good about this show, beginning with the fact that it's a Steven Spielberg and Diablo Cody collaboration (she, of the Juno fame).

United States of Tara stars Toni Colette. The actress has got quite a range, you'd agree with me. She can do any role and be very, very good at it. In this new comedy/drama, she plays Tara, a woman with multiple personality (so, yeah...imagine the challenge).

It also marks the return of John Corbett in a series. Last I saw him, he was moving on from Carrie Bradshaw.

Premiering Jan 18th on Showtime, here is Tara's trailer:

Read more of Tara in my mid-season calendar.

Sarah Chalke: Maneater. Love it!

Loving this idea.

Sarah Chalke, gorgeous funny girl + Gigi Levangie Grazer, who wrote Starter Wife (which I'm really enjoying!) = fun!

This project sounds like a perfect vehicle for Sarah Chalke.

THR Reports:

Sarah Chalke has signed to star in Lifetime's four-hour miniseries "Maneater," based on Gigi Levangie Grazer's book.

In addition, Timothy Busfield has come on board to direct the Sony Pictures Television-produced mini, which is being adapted by Suzanne Martin ("Frasier").

"Maneater," airing next year, centers on Clarissa Alpert (Chalke), a shallow thirtysomething socialite in a panic because she's still single. Setting her sights on a Hollywood producer, Clarissa puts into motion a plan to land herself a husband.

Martin and Grazer ("The Starter Wife") are exec producing "Maneater" with 3 Arts' Stephanie Davis.

"Scrubs" co-star Chalke worked with Lifetime on the movie "Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy."

Busfield has directed episodes of "Lipstick Jungle," "Las Vegas" and "Ed." He also served as executive producer on "Jungle."
And its a short four hour series. Just the right amount of time frame. Because women-centric TV programs usually go bad some 30 episodes or so later (Hello, Desperate Housewives, Sex and The City!).

Is Gigi Levangie Grazer the new Candice Bushnell?

Hey, ABC! Can Lee Pace star in this please?

When I read this news item from The Hollywood Reporter, I immediately thought of Lee Pace.

Go ahead, read and see why ----

DC Comics' "Fables" is heading to ABC.

The network has handed out a put pilot commitment to the fantasy project, based on the comic book created by Bill Willingham and published by DC's Vertigo imprint.

"Six Degrees" creators/executive producers Stu Zicherman and Raven Metzner are penning the script for the hourlong drama set at Warner Bros. TV.

David Semel has come on board to direct "Fables," which revolves around characters from fairy tales and folklore living in exile in modern-day New York.

"Their lives become interconnected in vary big way," Zicherman said. "They share a secret and a bond."

Zicherman and Metzner wouldn't elaborate which fairy tale characters will be featured in the TV series, but noted that Big Bad Wolf and Snow White, who are central to the comics, will have a similar role on the show.

The comic book series' first storyline followed Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, who investigates the murder of Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red.

"We set up a structure to allow any fairy tale character to show up in any one episode," Metzner said.

The fairy tale characters will keep some of their trademark characteristics. For instance, Prince Charming will be handsome, while Big Bad Wolf will have to shave a four-day shadow from growing back every day.

But overall, "they are just like real people in the real world who live and breathe and look just like you and me," Metzner said.

If ABC can't picture it yet, then here...I can help them out and give them an image:

Fitting, huh?

Upcoming New Show Alert: BETTER OFF TED - Watch its trailer!

Here it is! I've been waiting for a clip of it off Youtube since I've seen the teaser the previous week at another site. Better Off Ted stars some familiar people --- Portia De Rossi is one; and Andrea Anders is another.

The comedy series is expected to air by early next year on ABC, but its schedule hasn't been confirmed.

First impressions based on this short clip?
Whimsy, check!
Quirky, check!
Absurdity, check!
Arrested Development-ish and The Office-ish humor, check!

I'm kinda liking what I see! Watch the teaser and let me know if you feel the same ---

If you'd like to see a list of upcoming new shows, I've just updated it over here.

04 December 2008

Upcoming New Show Alert: CASTLE - Watch its trailer!

For Nathan Fillion's sake, I do hope this series stands through the test. He's had no luck with his projects sticking around for one season. His last show, Drive, aired for about four episodes.

Castle, from this trailer, looks like a crime procedural, a fairly popular format among the viewing public in the US. It's a story of mystery-thriller writer who discovers that a copycat has been doing the crimes from his books for real. And he offers to help police solve the cases.

I tell you what right now --- I am not feeling the female lead and I don't know why that is.

Here's the trailer to Castle, which will be airing beginning March 2009 on ABC.

03 December 2008

Upcoming Show Alert: KINGS - Watch its trailer!

Kings is one of those I look forward to because for one thing, I like the basic premise of it --- power and deception. Those elements just makes stories interesting, doesn't it? For another thing, I'm also waiting for this because I like watching Ian McShane back on TV. That man's got a terrifying presence on screen. I can't not stay put and watch.

But will Kings be of interest to many viewers?

The show is loosely based on the story of King David (of David and Goliath) but it is set in the present day. A TV critic calls the script "bold, bizarre and fun". For network television (as Kings will be airing on NBC this mid-season), it is something that has not yet been done before. Which means it can either be 1) too good, it becomes a success; or 2) too difficult to grasp, it will fail.

Watch this teaser and see if you like it ---

First impressions based on this short video? It looks like serious TV, man! And I'm starting to have doubts. Not about the show, but on whether or not I'd be able to follow it! I have a feeling I'd be falling under Group #2 or those who'd have a hard time grasping the story! Hah! The teaser looks complex.

Anyhow, there isn't a date set for the premiere. But I'd update this on my list as soon as it's announced.

Leverage Premieres Tonight!

Finally, something new on American TV. I was beginning to get restless because this season is really sucking. Hopefully, Leverage will pick my interest up. That, and the entire final season of The Shield, which I should start watching soon, right?

Anyway, this heist show will begin airing today/tonight. I've previously written of it here, having watched the pilot episode some months back.

And here's the teaser ---

My excitement meter is up!

Upcoming Show Alert: CUPID. Watch its trailer!

Cupid is a revival of this 90's series that never lasted for more than one season. The old show and its revival were both created by Rob Thomas, whose most familiar credit in the world of TV is Veronica Mars. The former series starred Jeremy Piven, pre-Entourage and Paula Marshall (who is now on Gary Unmarried). The revival stars Bobby Carnavale (Will and Grace) and Sarah Paulson (Studio 60).

The basic premise? The lead character believes he is the Greek god from Mt. Olympus sent back to our world as a punishment. He can only return to Olympus if he successfully matches 100 couples. Cupid (named Trever Hale back on Earth) also sees a therapist in a singles-only group.

Here is the revival's trailer ----

And here is a scene from the original 90's version ---

The EW ranks Cupid (original) as one of the Top Ten Shows Before Their Time. The revival, it seems, is ripe for this decade.

As much as I like Jeremy Piven and as much as his performance in this series did not miss with critics before, I think that it's easier to warm up to the new actors this time around. The Piven/Marshall combo appeared so much more arrogant, lofty and less down to earth (pun not intended) as characters, from what little I remember. This new version, for some reason and based on the trailer alone, appears to have more genial, more relatable characters than the first.

Cupid is set to air next year on ABC.

Chandler Bing's Nightmare Comes To TV!

"His legs flail about as if independent from his body!" So says Chandler Bing when asked "what phenomenon scares the bejesus out of him". He is, of course, talking about Michael Flatley and Flatley is heading to Primetime TV.

NBC is planning on putting a new dancing show, a dance olympic of sorts, with him as the host.

"We've always wanted to be in the dance business, but the question was how to be unique and different," said Craig Plestis, NBC's executive vp alternative programming, development and specials. "Our show makes every other dance show seem like amateur hour. We got the best of the best. Americans will be blown away when they see what real professionals can do."

"It's the 'Olympic Games of dance' -- everybody gets it right away," Lythgoe said. "Dancing has taken off in this country, the Olympics took off in this country; here we're bringing them both together. It's not just celebrities and their partners trying to dance or young people attempting to be great dancers. These are the great dancers."

Each country's team will present two dance soloists, a duet and a group. Their performances will be graded by judges from each participating country.

The judges have a tricky job as each country will perform in a different style unique to their culture -- Shaolin monks from China vs. Bollywood dancers from India, for example. Troupes from Ireland, the U.S., Argentina, Russia and South Africa also are represented. - Via

The show is slated for early next year. And since it's from the same people who are producing So You Think You Can Dance, I'm thinking this is the one that inspired it:

This is a new genre for us in our series efforts, and it’s great to be able to tackle it with Dean. His Librarian movies for TNT have been huge successes. We couldn’t be happier having him and John Rogers bring that same sense of style and storytelling to us in series form.” In LEVERAGE, Hutton plays former insurance investigator Nate Ford, a once-loyal corporate employee who had recovered millions of dollars in stolen goods for his employer. But when that employer denied his son’s insurance claims and allowed the boy to die, he realized he could no longer work for such an entity. Out of work and descending into alcoholism, Ford is hired by an aeronautics executive to recover airplane designs the executive claims were stolen by a rival company. Helping him are four highly skilled team members: Parker (Beth Riesgraf – Alvin and the Chipmunks), an expert thief; Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge – Friday Night Lights), a specialist in Internet and computer fraud; Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane – Into the West), a high-octane “retrieval specialist” who can take out a gang of henchmen without breaking a sweat; and Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman – Coupling), a grifter who could win awards for her acting skills during difficult scams. At first the newly formed team is hesitant to trust each other after so many years working alone but being double-crossed changes the dynamic, ultimately forcing them to unite. They emerge from the job realizing they are far better working together than apart. Once they discover they can trust each other the group targets their cons toward the richest, the greediest and the most unjust.

TRUE BEAUTY (ABC) Premiere: 1/5/09 at 10:00 PM Schedule: Mondays 10:00 PM-11:00 PM EST What makes a person truly beautiful? Executive producers Tyra Banks ("The Tyra Banks Show," "America's Next Top Model") and Ashton Kutcher (executive producer of "Punk'd" and "Beauty and the Geek") re-define the concept of beauty in a wildly revealing new ABC series, "True Beauty," premiering, MONDAY, JANUARY 5, 2009 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. Hosted and judged by Vanessa Minnillo (former host of "TRL" and "ET"), along with judges Cheryl Tiegs (America's first supermodel, currently designer and author) and Nol Marin ("America's Next Top Model" and fashion expert for E!, TV Guide, "The Tyra Banks Show"), the series will determine the "True Beauty" of six stunning females and four handsome males who will live together in a spectacular Los Angeles mansion as they undergo a series of challenges to determine who is truly the most beautiful. The gorgeous contestants assume they're being judged solely on their outer appearance. They're only half right; outer beauty is one component the judges are looking for, but contestants are also being evaluated -- unbeknownst to them -- for their INNER beauty as well when they're put through scenarios and situations that require them to make moral decisions. Each episode will showcase an outer beauty and an inner beauty challenge, during which contestants will be judged on everything from how well they perform in photo shoots to how well they respect their elders. The three judges will observe and critique the contestants' behavior and eliminate one person each week. Only after someone is eliminated will the truth about the show be revealed to him/her, as they watch a video montage of their behavior captured by a hidden camera during the shoot. At the end of eight episodes, one winner will be declared, a person who is truly beautiful inside and out. That person will receive a cash prize and a spot in PEOPLE magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People issue.

Rick and Kate's styles instantly clash, yet sparks begin to fly, leading both to danger and a hint of romance as Castle steps in to help find the killer. And once that case is solved, he and Beckett build upon their new relationship as they look to solve strange homicides in New York as much fun as one can have with death & murder. CUPID (ABC) Premiere: 3/24/2009 10:00 PM Schedule: Tuesdays from 10:00 PM-9:00 PM EST Like any big city, New York has its share of characters. But the newest one isn't like the rest. For starters, his goal in life is to help people fall in love, which isn't such a bad thing. But he says he must create 100 happily-ever-afters in order to return to his home—Mount Olympus. Because he's Cupid, the ancient Roman god of love. Duh. He claims being punished by the other Gods for the modern world's sorry state of love, and was sent to Earth without his famed bow and arrow, to rediscover what really makes love work. As fate would have it, Cupid, sometimes known as Trevor Hale, is under the care of famous psychologist and self-help author Dr. Claire Allen. Even though Claire disagrees with Trevor's methods, she can't argue with the sentiment, since she too is dedicated to helping lonely hearts find their soul mates. But these two experts in love couldn't be more different: he believes love blooms fast and carnal and passionate, while she thinks it grows slowly, moderately and sensibly. While he busies himself making matches, she endeavors to figure out who Trevor really is. Is he a man who's losing his mind after the loss of his one true love? Is he really crazy? Or (gulp) is he really Cupid? From writer-creator Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars) comes a re-imagining of his 1998 cult favorite series of the same name. Bobby Cannavale stars in this romantic-comedy procedural that will match up a new loving couple each week, though romance may not always bloom quite where we expect it to. This warm, witty series is a charming reminder that even though true love may be madness… it's the only thing keeping us sane.

THE UNUSUALS (ABC) Premiere: 4/08/09 at 8:00 PM Schedule: Wednesdays from 10:00 PM-11:00 PM EST As a cop, it helps to have a twisted sense of humor—because every moment could be your last. Just ask Casey Shraeger. She started her day as an NYPD vice detective posing as a Lincoln Tunnel hooker before unexpectedly being transferred to the homicide division. Casey quickly realizes that not only does everyone in her new department have a distinct sense of humor but everyone also has their own dirty little secret… Sgt. Brown is lusting after Detective Beaumont. Detective Delahoy is nursing a brain tumor and trying to die a noble death in the line of duty. His partner Detective Banks just turned 52 and fears that, like his father, he won't make it to 53. Detective Cole is deeply religious but has a shady past. And although Casey's new partner, Detective Walsh, appears to be clean, while investigating the murder of his former partner, Casey uncovers evidence that suggests that even Walsh may have a secret or two. Casey has a secret of her own. She grew up wealthy and privileged in New York high society and became a cop because she saw first hand how money can buy justice. As she learns from the precinct's mysterious and seldom-seen Lt. Little, Casey was brought to the homicide division because she's one of the few honest cops in the district. And with her help, Lt. Little plans to start cleaning house. Equal parts NYPD Blue and The Office, The Unusuals is a unique comedic procedural whose realistic setting makes the frequent laughs that much more outrageous. TV in Development: Current Affairs, Operating Instructions, Stiffs

I am still feeling a bit under the weather but I couldn't help get excited over these shows and post a blog about it even if these are still under development. These projects may be possibly stalled or be abandoned mid-way (hope not!) but the prospect of new programs to look forward to? It makes me giddy. New shows to watch are always a welcome thought!

These are all shows planned for next year, for USA Network:
Covert Affairs (working title): For Annie, love seems to be have been lost in translation. A well-traveled linguist training at the CIA, Annie gets called up to Langley headquarters when her unique specialties are required in solving a critical case. Upon arrival, she's shocked to meet her new partner, Ben, the man who broke her heart when he unceremoniously dumped her many years ago -- when he couldn't disclose his joining the CIA. Being forced to work together reveals that there's clearly still strong chemistry, but for now, Ben's engagement to another woman dampens any smoldering possibility of a rekindled relationship. From Universal Cable Studios, written and co-executive produced by Matt Corman (Deck the Halls) and Chris Ord (Deck the Halls). Dave Bartis (Knight Rider) and Doug Liman (Knight Rider, the Bourne trilogy) are Executive Producers through their company, Dutch Oven.

Operating Instructions (working title): A top female trauma surgeon returns home from the horrors of Iraq to take a job at an inner-city hospital. As she immediately sets about saving lives, she quickly realizes that her battlefield exercises hardly prepared her for the ludicrous bureaucratic minefields of today's public health system and the romantic war games she's about to engage. From Conaco and Universal Cable Studios, written and executive produced by Judd Pillot and John Peaslee (According To Jim, 8 Simple Rules, Just Shoot Me). Executive produced by Conan O'Brien (Andy Barker, P.I.). and David Kissinger (Andy Barker, P.I.).

Stiffs (working title): Jack is a charming, fast-talking salesman whose life is turned upside down when he suddenly becomes a single father. Making mature, responsible choices doesn't come easy for Jack, but he decides to work nights so he can spend quality time with daughter Chloe during the day. The term nightshift takes on new meaning when Jack finds himself at the morgue transporting bodies, a job arranged by his brother Charlie -- a shy but brilliant medical examiner who continually buries his instinct that some "accidents" are in fact, murders. Soon, Jack's impetuousness forces Charlie to pursue those instincts, leading them to investigate these homicides and ensure that their victims find justice. Written and co-executive produced by Craig O'Neill (Burn Notice) and Jason Tracey (Burn Notice). Executive produced by Peter Guber (Into the Blue, Batman) and Elizabeth Stephen (Brotherhood). | IGN

Pilot Watch: JJ Abrams new TV series Fringe

Variety reports that Kirk Acevedo (Band of Brothers, Oz) and Tomas Arana (Gladiator) have signed on to be in the new JJ Abrams (Lost) series, FRINGE.

The series will begin shooting for the pilot episode in February. The script to the pilot has been done long before the strike took place. It is intended to air in the 2008-2009 season on Fox. Fringe centers around an FBI agent and a deranged scientist collaborating to investigate the paranormal.

Show description from FutonCritic:
drama about a young female fbi agent who, forced to confront the spread of powerful and unexplained phenomena, must work with an institutionalized scientist whose life's work may be at the center of the coming storm.

FOX has given a hefty two-hour pilot commitment to the project with a $10 million budget and a potential series license fee of up to $2 million per episode.

It's understood the series will feature three leads - the FBI agent; the scientist, Walter Bishop, described as a mix of Einstein and Dr. Frankenstein; and his grownup son, with whom he has a dysfunctional relationship.

Let's see. That sounds like...they turned Mulder into a woman, Scully into a man, actually a deranged man, added a third lead, with more elements of drama and mystery?

No word on the female agent yet.

Jennifer Garner? Yes? I'm just saying. I just suddenly miss her on TV. Which reminds me...I've got to go and finish Alias!!
